Two-Storey Architectural Cottage Renovated With Bespoke Finishes
Tecon Building renovated a single-storey, one-bedroom old worker’s cottage into a two-storey, two-bedroom, 1.5-bathroom architecturally designed home while retaining its original streetscape charm.
An open-plan layout maximised the space which created a comfortable living area. Bifold doors were integrated to connect the kitchen to the backyard, forming a relaxed indoor–outdoor entertaining zone. Also, a large island bench was designed and built to serve as the focal point, providing a gathering space for guests, extra storage, and a preparation area.
The design incorporated a discreet side addition that housed a bespoke staircase minimising visual impact and improving interior flow. Outside, an intricate jerkinhead roof was also integrated to reflect the cottage silhouette, keeping the home in character with the street.
Architectural details included custom cabinetry, engineered flooring, fluted glass and bespoke stairs introducing practical modern finishes and textures throughout the home. In addition to this, v-groove ceilings and micro shaker wardrobes added subtle detail to the bedrooms and skylights brought in natural light.

From the early stages, Ben worked closely with our architect to create a clever design that gave us a contemporary, architecturally built home—while still being practical and functional for the small space we had to work with. His eye for detail was fantastic, ensuring cleverly incorporated storage, from built-in cupboards to thoughtful lighting and bespoke carpentry features. Another standout was how he built the side addition staircase—creating more room at the bottom and fitting two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs.
As this was my first build, there was a lot to take in, but Ben guided me through with clear communication and regular budget updates, which really put me at ease. He was an excellent project manager—reminding me of key decisions along the way while keeping everything on track.
Ben was also very hands-on, working closely with his trades to ensure everything was completed to the highest standard. The build itself was quite intricate—tight spaces and adding another storey—but he and his team managed it seamlessly. His trades were efficient, professional, and often suggested clever ideas to make the home even more comfortable.
